Some Gently Mad Recommendations

It has been a month or so since I have listed some recommendations. You can see my other recommendations at the links below.

So now that you have perused those recommendations let me add these few items to the list. There is no real theme to these following books other than they are great reads or they are very informative great reads.

The Knife Man: Blood, Body Snatching, and the Birth of Modern Surgery
I found this book on the 3 for 2 table at Borders last week. On a whim I picked it up along with two other books (one is listed next). It tells the story of John Hunter one of the pioneers in surgery. Moore’s writing is clear and concise. The story is fascinating. I highly recommend it.

In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex
This was recommended by a friend of mine so I pass it along to you. I haven’t cracked it open yet but I trust him (you better be right there my friend or else). It tells the tale of the whaleship Essex and its sinking by a sperm whale the subsequent survival of the remaining crew. It won the National Book Award so it has to be good, right?

Calculating God
I had a marathon reading session last night and finished this great book. An alien lands in Toronto (I know, I know, why Canada? Beats me) and asks to be taken to see a paleontologist. It seems that Earth and two other planets have had the same extinction events throughout history at the same times. And the alien want sot learn about Earth’s fossil record. Oh did I mention that the alien believes in God?

Wow, only three this time. Well three is better than none. As before, those books link to Amazon which I get a kick back from which helps support Horror Literature Quarterly (which means I get to pay my authors better rates so buy through me). Also if you like to see more recommendations The Reading Room at HFNN has Must Have Horror Lists which can be purchased in the The Reading Room at HFNN - The Book Store. All proceeds go to helping maintain HLQ.
